Wheelchair Fashion Can be Trendy, Formal, Casual or Comfortable!
For those who do not use a wheelchair, the notion of 'wheelchair fashion' may seem silly. However, it is just as important for a person in a wheelchair to feel good about how they look as it is for someone who is not in a wheelchair.
Clothing plays an important role in any person’s life. When there is a special occasion, it’s important to dress in formal attire. If a sporting even is being attended, it is fun to dress in colors and attire that show support for a team. And, if a person in a wheelchair has an office job, it’s essential that business clothes be worn to work.
What most people do not know is that a person in a wheelchair can usually not dress in off-the-rack clothes from a department store. Most off-the-rack clothes, however, can be tailored and modified to work well for a person in a wheelchair.
If shopping for clothes from a regular store and knowing that the clothes will need to be altered seems like a lot of work, there are companies (both internet and catalog) that offer fashionable attire designed specifically for a person in a wheelchair.
There are many clothing styles that can flatter people in wheelchairs. And, similarly, there are styles that should be avoided. For example, when a woman wears a shirt and skirt, the shirt can tend to bunch at the waist. By not tucking the skirt in to the skirt, this problem can be avoided.
Some tips to help adapt fashionable clothes into 'wheelchair fashions' are: add zippers down the sides of pants and shirts, add elastic to the waists of pants, remove buttons and add hook and loops for closures, get rid of the standard fly, and add Velcro to the closure of pants.
Wheelchair fashions don’t have to stop with regular, every-day clothes. If there is a formal event to attend - - a wedding, for example - - a dressy-dress can be worn or a skirt and fancy blouse can look wonderful. A man’s tuxedo can also fit comfortably and be fashionably worn in a wheelchair. With the ability to dress up for an occasion, a person in a wheelchair will look great and feel great wearing the proper attire.
It’s misunderstanding for anyone not in a wheelchair to believe that a person in a wheelchair does not care how he or she looks or dresses. In fact, most people, no matter what their situation, strive to look their best when they are in public. Knowing this, even people who have a difficult time getting clothes on their bodies have the right and desire to look good!
For those who use wheelchairs and for those who also know the true meaning of a comfortable outfit, but who also have a strong desire to stay fashionable, there is always another means of dressing up an outfit: accessorizing. Accessories are the key to easy and trendy fashion.
Scarves, jewelry, fancy shoes and hair accessories can all spice up wheelchair fashions. With accessories, individuals can pick and choose what they like best and wear it. Then, altering and modifying regular, off-the-rack clothes can be kept to a minimum. With accessories, a person’s clothes can be kept as comfortable as possible.
Almost any clothing item can be adapted to a 'wheelchair fashion,' but the alterations and modifications to the clothing may be more work than it’s worth. Nonetheless, if fashion is important to a person, anything is possible. Looking good and feeling good are two important factors in every person’s life and fortunately, wheelchair fashion is not an exception!
